Dozen hospitals, many doctors serving area

With two major health-care systems, a dozen hospitals and hundreds of doctors to choose from, area residents have a variety of health-care options.

Wellmont Health System
Wellmont Health System is composed of five hospitals in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

In addition to hospitals in the Wellmont system, a number of other facilities provided health-care and wellness services as part of Wellmont. Wellmont Madison House, located in Kingsport, provides assisted living and a therapeutic day program for frail elderly persons and mid-life adults with chronic illnesses. Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol offers care for terminally ill patients with specific short-term needs. Medical centers and hospitals within the system are:

  • Holston Valley Medical Center, 130 W. Ravine Road, Kingsport. 224-4000. Centers of Excellence include the Christine LaGuardia Phillips Cancer Center, the James H. Quillen Regional Heart Center, the Regional Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, and a Level 1 Trauma Center. HVMC provides comprehensive children’s services, including children’s ambulance and neonatal and pediatric intensive care, and is a member of the Children’s Miracle Network.

  • Wellmont Holston Valley Outpatient Center, 103 W. Stone Drive, Kingsport. 224-4900. The $35 million center opened in early May 2003 and includes state-of-the-art rehabilitation, surgery and imaging facilities, constructed with patient privacy and convenience in mind. Services available at the new location include the Outpatient Diagnostic Center, Comprehensive Breast Center, Ambulatory Surgery Center, and Rehabilitation Services of Kingsport. Procedures that can be performed at the surgery center include orthopaedic, gynecologic, cosmetic and general surgery, as well as eye, ear, nose and throat procedures.

  • Bristol Regional Medical Center, 1 Medical Park Blvd., Bristol, Tenn., 844-1121. Centers of Excellence include acute care, cancer care, cardiac care, neuroscience, occupational health, outpatient services, rehabilitation services and women’s health. BRMC offers a Level II Trauma Center and psychiatric care services.

  • Buchanan General, Route 5, Box 20, Grundy, Va., (276) 935-1000. Services include an emergency department and a 12-bed intensive care and cardiac unit, as well as oncology care, obstetrics, outpatient services, physical therapy, radiology and surgical services.

  • Hawkins County Memorial Hospital, Locust Street, Rogersville, Tenn., 272-2671. Services include emergency care, inpatient and outpatient surgery, occupational therapy, physical therapy and radiology.

  • Lonesome Pine Hospital, Holton Avenue, Big Stone Gap, Va., (276) 523-3111. Services include an emergency department, radiology department, intensive care unit, general medical and surgical services, a pediatrics unit, obstetrical care and rehabilitation services.
    Mountain States Health Alliance
    Mountain States Health Alliance is a locally owned and managed health-care system based in Johnson City. Medical centers and hospitals in the system are:

  • Indian Path Medical Center, 2000 Brookside Drive, Kingsport. 857-7000. The facility has 330 inpatient beds and a full range of outpatient services. Services include a nationally recognized Stroke Center, an emergency department with Level III trauma designation, a family-centered birthing center, geriatric psychiatric services and fertility center.

  • Indian Path Pavilion, 2300 Pavilion Drive, Kingsport. 392-5500. This fully accredited, private hospital provides adult psychiatric and chemical dependency inpatient and outpatient services.

  • Johnson City Medical Center, 400 N. State of Franklin Road, Johnson City. 431-6111. A 410-bed not-for-profit comprehensive, acute-care teaching hospital affiliated with East Tennessee State University, this center also is a major medical referral center with Level I Trauma Care and emergency medical air transport service.

  • Children’s Hospital at the Johnson City Medical Center, 400 N. State of Franklin Road, Johnson City. 431-6111. This 50-bed hospital offers a broad range of treatment by physicians trained in a variety of specialties.

  • Johnson City Specialty Hospital, 203 E. Watauga Ave., Johnson City. 434-1400. Services include obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, diabetes treatment, general and plastic surgery, and diagnostic breast care.

  • Northside Hospital, 401 Princeton Road, Johnson City. 854-5600. This 152-bed general acute care hospital provides a full range of acute care and skilled nursing services on an inpatient basis, a complementary set of outpatient services, and a 24-hour emergency department.

  • James H. and Cecile C. Quillen Rehabilitation Hospital, Johnson City, 952-1700 This is a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation hospital.

  • Sycamore Shoals Hospital, 1501 W. Elk Ave., Elizabethton. (423) 542-1300. Services include general medicine, surgery, orthopedics, urology, cardiology, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics and women’s diagnostics and specialties.
    Frontier Health
    The area’s behavioral health-care organization offers more than 85 programs and serves a 12-county area in Northeast Tennessee. Programs include Children and Youth Services, Adult Services, Substance Abuse Services, Mental Retardation/Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Specialty Services and Crisis Response Services. Frontier Health operates Woodridge Hospital at 403 N. State of Franklin Road in Johnson City. It is a 75-bed inpatient facility that offers psychiatric and substance abuse services, an intensive treatment program, a child/adolescent program, and adult program and geriatric care.     The James H. Quillen College of Medicine at ETSU
    This college was created by the Tennessee General Assembly in March 1974 to help alleviate a critical shortage of primary care physicians. The program has graduated more than 1,000 physicians.

    In 1991, the college was awarded the largest grant in ETSU’s history to that point — $6 million from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation — allowing it to move into two rural communities, Mountain City and Rogersville, and train some 80 students on site. ETSU Physicians and Associates, the clinical arm of the College of Medicine, is the largest outpatient facility.


    HealthSouth
    HealthSouth is one of the leading providers of outpatient rehabilitation services, and also offers complete and comprehensive inpatient care at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, 113 Cassel Drive in Kingsport. Call 246-7240.


    Holston Medical Group
    Holston Medical Group is a partnership of 50 multispecialty physicians who provide general surgery, neurology, orthopaedic surgery, gastroenterology, oncology and internal medicine, occupational medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, and primary care services to patients in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.
